What is a fit note (sick note)?
A fit note — also known as a sick note or medical certificate — is an official document from a GP confirming that a patient is unfit for work due to illness or injury. Fit notes are required by employers for absences longer than 7 days. They can also advise on a phased return to work or workplace adjustments.

- When your employer requires medical evidence of your illness
- When claiming statutory sick pay (SSP)
- When applying for Universal Credit or Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)

Frequently asked questions
Can a private GP issue a sick note?
Yes. A private GP can issue a legally valid fit note. Private fit notes are accepted by all UK employers and by DWP for benefits purposes.
How much does a private sick note cost?
A GP consultation at The Vesey starts from £90. The fit note is issued as part of the consultation. Virtual GP consultations (video or phone) start from £70.
Can I get a backdated sick note?
A GP can issue a fit note covering a period that has already passed, provided they are satisfied you were unfit for work. They cannot certify a period they have no clinical knowledge of.
Is a private sick note valid for SSP?
Yes. A fit note from any GMC-registered doctor — including a private GP — is legally valid for Statutory Sick Pay and benefits purposes.
Can I get a sick note on a Sunday?
Yes. The Vesey is open every Sunday from 8am to 8pm. GP appointments and sick note issuance are available on Sundays at the same price as weekdays.

Self-certification vs fit note — what is the difference?
For absences of 7 calendar days or fewer, employees can self-certify their illness without a GP note. Your employer has no legal right to require a medical certificate for this period, though company sick pay policies may vary.
For absences longer than 7 calendar days, you need an official fit note (formerly called a sick note or medical certificate) from a GP. Only doctors registered with the GMC can issue fit notes under UK law. Private GPs — including our team at The Vesey — can issue legally valid fit notes.
Can a private GP sick note be used by my employer?
Yes. A fit note issued by a GMC-registered private GP is legally valid and must be accepted by your employer under the same terms as one issued by an NHS GP. All Vesey GPs hold full GMC registration. If you need confirmation of a clinician's registration for your employer, GMC registration numbers are available on request.
What if my condition is ongoing?
For longer-term conditions, fit notes can cover periods of several weeks. Our GPs can issue notes for initial periods and follow-up notes as needed. If ongoing sick pay or benefit claims are involved, we can provide supporting medical documentation as part of a follow-up consultation.
