How we assess and investigate

The breast surgery consultation includes a full breast examination with a chaperone available. Triple assessment — clinical examination, imaging (ultrasound here at The Vesey, and/or mammography arranged through our imaging partners), and tissue sampling — is the gold standard for any discrete breast lump. Breast ultrasound is arranged at or following the consultation. Mammography is co-ordinated via our radiology partners for women over 35 or where clinically indicated. Fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) and core biopsy are performed where required. MRI breast is arranged for high-risk surveillance or where other imaging is inconclusive.

Treatment options at The Vesey

  • Excision biopsy and wire-guided excision for suspicious lesions
  • Breast cyst aspiration
  • Fibroadenoma excision where symptomatic
  • Gynaecomastia assessment and management — medical or surgical
  • MDT referral for confirmed breast cancer
  • Familial breast cancer risk assessment and screening co-ordination (BRCA pathway)

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a GP referral to see a breast surgeon?

No. You can self-refer directly without a GP letter. If you find a new breast lump or notice a change, you can book online or by WhatsApp.

How much does a private breast surgery consultation cost?

Consultant breast surgery consultations start from £260. A triple assessment package (examination, ultrasound, and biopsy if required at the same visit) is available from £450.

How quickly can I be seen?

Appointment availability varies depending on clinician availability. Please check our online booking system for the latest available appointments. For urgent symptoms such as a rapidly enlarging lump or skin changes, please contact our team so we can prioritise your assessment.

What is triple assessment for a breast lump?

Triple assessment is the international gold standard for breast lump evaluation, combining clinical examination, imaging (ultrasound here at The Vesey, and/or mammography arranged through our imaging partners), and tissue sampling (FNAC or core biopsy) at a single visit where possible.

Does The Vesey accept health insurance for breast surgery?

Yes. The Vesey is recognised by BUPA, Vitality, AXA, WPA, Cigna, Aviva, and Healix. Please have your policy number and pre-authorisation reference to hand when booking.

What should I do if I find a breast lump?

Book a private breast assessment as soon as possible — appointment availability varies depending on clinician availability, so please check our online booking system for the latest available appointments. If the lump appeared suddenly with associated skin changes, nipple inversion, or skin dimpling, also contact your GP for an urgent same-day referral to the NHS breast clinic.

Can men be seen in the breast clinic?

Yes. Gynaecomastia (male breast tissue enlargement) and male breast lumps are assessed at The Vesey. Men account for around 1% of breast cancer cases and should seek prompt assessment of any new breast lump.
