Sexual health concerns are among the most common reasons people turn to private care — not because NHS GUM services are poor, but because waiting times, lack of anonymity, and limited appointment slots make accessing care difficult exactly when it matters most. At The Vesey, a GP-led sexual health assessment is confidential, quick, and comprehensive. Nothing is shared with your GP without your explicit consent.

Our sexual health GPs follow BASHH (British Association for Sexual Health and HIV), FSRH (Faculty of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare), and NICE guidelines for all sexual health conditions and contraception prescribing.

From our sexual health team

“Sexual health is healthcare. The stigma that used to attach itself to STI testing is diminishing but it has not gone — and we see patients every week who delayed testing because they were embarrassed to ask their GP. Our service is completely separate from your NHS record unless you want it shared. That confidentiality is the thing that allows people to come in.”

Full STI panel — what's included, window periods, when to test

A full STI screen at The Vesey includes the following:

  • HIV — 4th generation antigen/antibody test. Detectable from 4 weeks post-exposure (99% sensitive at 6 weeks). Rapid point-of-care test available for a result within 30 minutes.
  • Syphilis — combined treponemal and non-treponemal antibody test. Window period 6 weeks. Early syphilis is treated with a single intramuscular penicillin injection.
  • Chlamydia & gonorrhoea — NAAT (nucleic acid amplification test) on urine, throat and rectal swabs as appropriate for anatomy and exposure. Window period: 2 weeks. Most sensitive available test.
  • Hepatitis B — surface antigen (HBsAg) for current infection; surface antibody (HBsAb) to confirm vaccine immunity. Hepatitis B vaccination offered where not immune.
  • Hepatitis C — antibody test. Window period 8–12 weeks. Important for patients with injection drug use history or blood exposure.

When to test: window periods vary by infection. Testing too early after exposure may give a false negative. Our GPs advise on optimal timing based on your specific exposure date and type. If you are within the window period, we arrange a repeat test at the appropriate interval.

Contraception options — implant, coil, pill, emergency contraception

The Vesey offers the full range of contraceptive options, prescribed by experienced GPs following FSRH guidelines:

  • Combined oral contraceptive pill (COCP) — oestrogen and progesterone. Effective for contraception and managing heavy periods, PMS, and endometriosis. Multiple formulations available; we select the most appropriate based on your medical history and risk factors.
  • Progesterone-only pill (POP) — suitable where oestrogen is contraindicated (migraine with aura, hypertension, breastfeeding, age over 35 who smoke). The desogestrel-containing POP provides a 12-hour missed pill window.
  • Contraceptive injection (Depo-Provera / Sayana Press) — 12-week dosing. Very effective. May cause menstrual irregularity and a delay in return of fertility after stopping.
  • Implant (Nexplanon) — a small rod inserted under the skin of the upper arm under local anaesthetic. Lasts 3 years. Over 99% effective. Assessment and fitting referral arranged at The Vesey.
  • Intrauterine device (IUD) and intrauterine system (IUS) — copper IUD provides non-hormonal contraception for 5–10 years. Hormonal IUS (Mirena, Kyleena, Jaydess) reduces periods significantly. Assessment and fitting referral available.
  • Emergency contraception — levonorgestrel (Levonelle) effective within 72 hours; ulipristal acetate (ellaOne) within 120 hours. Copper IUD is the most effective option and can be fitted up to 5 days after unprotected intercourse. We can advise and prescribe on the day.
