How we assess and investigate
The weight loss consultation is a comprehensive medical assessment covering BMI, body composition, metabolic parameters, medical history, current medications, and previous weight loss attempts. Baseline bloods include HbA1c, fasting glucose, insulin, lipids, liver function, renal function, and thyroid function. Blood pressure and ECG are recorded. Eligibility for GLP-1 therapy is assessed against NICE criteria (BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with weight-related comorbidity). Psychological readiness assessment ensures appropriate support is in place.

When to see a specialist
The weight loss clinic is appropriate if your BMI is 30 or above, or 27 or above with a weight-related health condition (type 2 diabetes, hypertension, sleep apnoea, PCOS, joint problems); if you have tried diet and exercise programmes without sustained success; if you wish to be assessed for GLP-1 medication; or if you are preparing for bariatric surgery.
