An iron blood test — often called ‘iron studies’ — measures how much iron your body has stored and available. It usually includes ferritin (your iron stores), serum iron, and transferrin or total iron-binding capacity.

Iron is essential for making haemoglobin, which carries oxygen in the blood. Low iron is the most common cause of anaemia and can cause tiredness, breathlessness, pale skin, brittle nails and poor concentration.

Understanding Your Iron Result

Ferritin is the most useful marker of iron stores: a low ferritin confirms iron deficiency, often before anaemia develops. Ferritin can be falsely raised by inflammation, so it is read in context.

If iron is low, your clinician will look for the cause (such as diet, heavy periods or gut blood loss) and advise on supplements or further tests.

Who Should Have an Iron Test?

Consider testing if you feel persistently tired or breathless, have heavy periods, follow a vegetarian or vegan diet, or have been told you may be anaemic.

The test can be booked on its own or alongside a full blood count at The Vesey, with no referral required.
