QFIT faecal immunochemical test

QFIT (quantitative faecal immunochemical test) measures tiny amounts of human blood in a stool sample that cannot be seen by eye. Doctors use it to help decide who needs further bowel investigation, such as a colonoscopy. It costs £50 at The Vesey, Sutton Coldfield, with no referral needed.

About QFIT

What does a positive QFIT mean?

A raised result means blood was found in your stool. It does not mean you have cancer: bleeding can come from many causes, such as piles, polyps or inflammation. A raised result does mean you should be assessed by a doctor, usually with a referral for further bowel investigation.

Who may consider it

Adults with bowel symptoms who want a first test, often alongside a GP assessment.

NHS bowel screening

If you are eligible for the NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, please complete your home kit when it arrives. This private test does not replace it.

A normal result

A normal result makes some serious bowel conditions less likely, but it does not rule them out. If your symptoms continue, see a doctor.

See a doctor promptly, rather than waiting for a test, if you have: blood in your stool or black stools, unexplained weight loss, a change in bowel habit lasting more than three weeks, difficulty swallowing, persistent vomiting, a lump in your tummy, or severe or worsening pain. You can book a private GP appointment or contact your NHS GP. Call 999 for severe bleeding or collapse.

Why test with The Vesey

Clinical tests, not just a wellness kit

Alongside the microbiome test we offer the stool tests GPs use: FIT for hidden blood, faecal elastase for pancreatic function and the H. pylori stool antigen test.

A CQC-registered clinic

You collect your kit and instructions from our team at The Vesey in Sutton Coldfield and can ask questions face to face, rather than ordering a kit online and working it out alone.

Results reviewed by a GP

A GP reviews any result outside the normal range. You can book a follow-up GP or dietetics appointment here, and we can refer you to a gastroenterologist if needed.

Clear about red-flag symptoms

A gut test is never a reason to wait. If you have bleeding, weight loss, a lasting change in bowel habit or difficulty swallowing, we tell you to see a doctor promptly.

QFIT (Faecal Immunochemical Test) FAQs

What is a QFIT test?

A quantitative faecal immunochemical test, which measures the amount of human blood in a stool sample. It helps doctors decide who needs further bowel investigation.

Is QFIT the same as NHS bowel screening?

The NHS Bowel Cancer Screening Programme also uses a FIT test, sent to eligible people at home. This private test is for anyone who wants testing outside that programme and does not replace it.

How much is the QFIT test?

£50, paid when you book online. The price includes the kit and laboratory analysis.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book and pay online without a referral.

How do I collect the sample?

At your appointment our team gives you the kit and walks you through the instructions. You collect a small stool sample at home using the kit and return it to The Vesey as instructed, and we send it to the laboratory.

Who reviews the results?

A GP reviews any result outside the normal range. You can book a follow-up GP appointment to discuss your results, and we can refer you to a gastroenterologist if needed.
