What is lymph node biopsy?
Lymph node biopsy involves the surgical removal of an enlarged lymph node for detailed histological analysis. It is performed when a lymph node remains enlarged without an obvious cause, or when lymphoma, cancer, or a granulomatous disease (such as sarcoidosis or tuberculosis) is suspected.
Excision biopsy — removing the entire lymph node — provides more tissue than needle biopsy and is preferred when lymphoma is in the differential diagnosis, as it allows assessment of the lymph node architecture which is critical for diagnosis and treatment planning.
The procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia as a day case and takes 30–45 minutes.
