What is lymph node biopsy?

Lymph node biopsy involves the surgical removal of an enlarged lymph node for detailed histological analysis. It is performed when a lymph node remains enlarged without an obvious cause, or when lymphoma, cancer, or a granulomatous disease (such as sarcoidosis or tuberculosis) is suspected.

Excision biopsy — removing the entire lymph node — provides more tissue than needle biopsy and is preferred when lymphoma is in the differential diagnosis, as it allows assessment of the lymph node architecture which is critical for diagnosis and treatment planning.

The procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia as a day case and takes 30–45 minutes.

Who is lymph node biopsy for?

You may be a suitable candidate for lymph node biopsy if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • A persistently enlarged lymph node present for more than 6 weeks without obvious cause
  • An enlarging lymph node with associated symptoms — night sweats, unintentional weight loss, fever
  • A lymph node larger than 2cm or with concerning features on ultrasound
  • Known or suspected malignancy requiring nodal staging
  • Prior needle biopsy that has returned inconclusive results
