What is umbilical hernia repair?
An umbilical hernia occurs when tissue protrudes through a weakness in the abdominal wall at or near the navel (umbilicus). They are common in infants — where many resolve spontaneously by age 4 — and in adults, where they typically require surgical repair.
Umbilical hernia repair is performed as a day case under general or local anaesthesia. A small incision is made at or around the navel, the hernial sac is reduced, and the defect is closed with sutures. Mesh reinforcement is used for larger defects to reduce the risk of recurrence. The procedure takes approximately 30–45 minutes.
