An ambulatory EEG gives the longest recording window of our EEG studies. It's a sensible option if you recognise any of these.

Infrequent seizures or episodes

If your episodes don't happen predictably enough to be captured during a short clinic recording, a full 24 hours gives a much better chance of catching one.

Correlating symptoms with brain activity

Keeping an event diary during the 24 hours lets your consultant match exactly what you experienced with what your brain was doing at that moment.

Inconclusive routine or sleep-deprived EEG

If a shorter recording hasn't given a clear answer, a full day-and-night recording can capture activity the shorter tests missed.

Your recording happens in two short appointments either side of a full day and night at home wearing the recorder.

Connection appointment (~45 min)

A Clinical Physiologist attaches electrodes to your scalp and connects them to a small portable recorder, worn on a belt or in a shoulder bag.

24 hours at home

You go about your normal day and sleep as usual, keeping a written diary of any symptoms or episodes and the exact time they happen.

Disconnection appointment (~30 min)

You return the next day for the equipment and electrodes to be removed and your recording downloaded for review.

You won't be able to wash your hair properly while wearing the recorder, so wash it beforehand. Always continue any prescribed medication as normal unless your referring clinician tells you otherwise.

2. Triage & scheduling

Our Clinical Physiologist team triages the referral, then our administration team contacts you to arrange a convenient appointment.

3. Your EEG

Sergio Cerqueira, Clinical Physiologist, connects your portable recorder onsite and removes it at your disconnection appointment the next day.

4. Consultant report

Your recording is reviewed and reported by Dr David Martín-López or Dr Omar Al-Khayatt, Consultant Neurophysiologist, and sent to your referring clinician.

What is an ambulatory EEG?

An ambulatory EEG is a portable EEG recorder worn continuously for 24 hours at home. It captures your brain's electrical activity through your normal daily routine and a full sleep cycle, and is reviewed and reported by a Consultant Neurophysiologist.

Do I need a referral for an ambulatory EEG?

Yes. This is a referral-based investigation, triaged by our Clinical Physiologist team before it's scheduled. Your GP or consultant can refer you, or you can request the test below and we'll help arrange the referral.

Is an ambulatory EEG uncomfortable?

No. The electrodes stay attached to your scalp throughout, which is painless, and the recorder itself is small, lightweight and designed to be worn comfortably on a belt or in a shoulder bag day and night.

How should I prepare for an ambulatory EEG?

Wash your hair before your connection appointment, as you won't be able to wash it properly while wearing the recorder. Wear loose-fitting, front-opening tops so the recorder and wires sit comfortably, and avoid swimming, bathing or vigorous exercise that could dislodge the electrodes. Take your usual medication as normal.

What do I do during the 24 hours?

Go about your normal day and sleep as usual. You'll be asked to keep a written diary of any symptoms or episodes and note the exact time they happen, which helps the team correlate what you experienced with what your brain was doing at that moment.

When will I get my results?

Your recording is reviewed and reported by a Consultant Neurophysiologist, and the report is sent to your referring clinician, who will discuss the result with you. Turnaround varies by referral urgency.

Can I shower or wash my hair while wearing the recorder?

No, not until your disconnection appointment the following day — the recorder and electrodes need to stay dry and in place throughout. It's designed to be worn day and night, including through sleep, so this is the only real restriction.
