A Clinical Physiologist carries out your recording using portable EEG equipment. The whole appointment takes around 45 minutes.

Sensors attached

Small metal discs are attached to your scalp with a soft, washable paste — this is painless and takes around 15–20 minutes.

Resting recording

You'll sit or lie comfortably, relaxed with your eyes open and then closed, while your brain's electrical activity is recorded for around 20–30 minutes.

Activation procedures

You may be asked to breathe deeply for a few minutes (hyperventilation) or look at a flashing light (photic stimulation) — standard, safe steps that can bring out patterns a resting recording alone might miss.

What is a routine EEG and what is it used for?

A routine EEG records the brain's electrical activity from small sensors placed on the scalp while you're awake and relaxed. It's most often used to help investigate suspected seizures, epilepsy, blackouts or funny turns, and is reviewed and reported by a Consultant Neurophysiologist.

Do I need a referral for a routine EEG?

Yes. This is a referral-based investigation, triaged by our Clinical Physiologist team before it's scheduled. Your GP or consultant can refer you, or you can request the test below and we'll help arrange the referral.

Is a routine EEG painful?

No. An EEG is completely painless and non-invasive. The sensors are attached to your scalp with a soft paste, and you'll simply sit or lie comfortably while the recording is taken.

How should I prepare for a routine EEG?

Wash your hair the night before or the morning of your appointment, but don't use any styling products, oils, gels or sprays, as these can interfere with the sensors. Eat and take your usual medication as normal, including any anti-seizure medication, unless your referring clinician tells you otherwise.

What happens during the appointment?

Your appointment lasts around 45 minutes in total. A Clinical Physiologist attaches small sensors to your scalp, then records your brain's electrical activity for around 20–30 minutes while you rest. You may be asked to breathe deeply for a short period or look at a flashing light — both are standard, safe parts of the test that can bring out patterns a resting recording alone might miss.

When will I get my results?

Your recording is reviewed and reported by a Consultant Neurophysiologist, and the report is sent to your referring clinician, who will discuss the result with you. Turnaround varies by referral urgency.

What if a routine EEG doesn't show anything?

A single routine EEG can be normal even in someone with epilepsy, because it only samples a short window of brain activity. If your clinical picture still points to a diagnosis that needs investigating further, your consultant may recommend a sleep-deprived or ambulatory EEG, which give a longer window and a higher chance of capturing abnormal activity.
