Small electrodes attached

Adhesive surface electrodes are placed around your elbow, forearm and hand — this is painless to attach.

Brief electrical pulses

Small, well-tolerated electrical pulses stimulate the ulnar nerve. You'll feel a brief tingle or twitch, not pain.

Conduction measured

The physiologist measures how fast and how strongly the signal travels across your elbow, comparing it with normal values and often with other nerves.

A nerve conduction study measures how well and how quickly electrical signals travel along the ulnar nerve at the elbow. It's used to confirm and grade cubital tunnel syndrome — compression of the ulnar nerve as it passes around the elbow.

Is it painful?

No, not in the way a needle test is. You'll feel brief, well-tolerated tingling or muscle twitches as small electrical pulses stimulate the nerve, but there are no needles involved and no lasting discomfort.

How should I prepare?

Keep your hands warm before and during the test, as cold hands can slow nerve conduction and affect the result. Avoid body lotion or moisturiser on the day, and let the team know if you have a pacemaker, another implanted device or a bleeding disorder. Take your usual medication as normal.

What happens during the appointment?

Small adhesive electrodes are placed around your elbow, forearm and hand, which is completely painless. The physiologist then applies brief, well-tolerated electrical pulses to stimulate the ulnar nerve — you'll feel a tingle or twitch, not pain — and measures how fast and how strongly the signal travels across your elbow, comparing it with normal values and often with other nerves.

Who reports the result?

This is a physiologist-led service. Your result is reviewed and issued by a Band 8 Clinical Physiologist in Neurophysiology, rather than a consultant, and the report is sent to your referring clinician.

What happens if the result is positive?

A positive result supports a referral back to your clinician to discuss treatment options — such as activity or splinting changes, or a surgical referral. This test identifies and grades the nerve compression; it doesn't itself treat the condition.
