Nerve Conduction Study — Peripheral Neuropathy Screening
A broader nerve conduction screen testing multiple nerves for generalised peripheral neuropathy — nerve damage that often causes numbness, tingling or weakness in the feet or hands. £405 all-inclusive · physiologist-reported · CQC-regulated.
When peripheral neuropathy screening is used
This test is a sensible next step if you recognise any of these.
Numbness, tingling or burning in the feet or hands
Often symmetric and gradually worsening, starting at the furthest points from the body.
Unexplained weakness or unsteadiness
Nerve damage can affect muscle strength and balance as well as sensation.
Diabetes or another condition linked to nerve damage
A baseline check or ongoing monitoring for a condition already known to put nerves at risk.

What happens during peripheral neuropathy screening
A Clinical Physiologist carries out your nerve conduction study using portable equipment, testing several nerves rather than a single site.
Small electrodes attached
Adhesive surface electrodes are placed at several points along the affected limb(s) — this is painless to attach.
Brief electrical pulses
Small, well-tolerated electrical pulses stimulate each nerve tested. You'll feel a brief tingle or twitch, not pain.
Several nerves measured
The physiologist tests more than one nerve to build a broader picture of nerve function, rather than checking a single site.
