A Clinical Physiologist carries out your nerve conduction study using portable equipment, testing several nerves rather than a single site.

Small electrodes attached

Adhesive surface electrodes are placed at several points along the affected limb(s) — this is painless to attach.

Brief electrical pulses

Small, well-tolerated electrical pulses stimulate each nerve tested. You'll feel a brief tingle or twitch, not pain.

Yes. This is a referral-based investigation, triaged by our Clinical Physiologist team before it's scheduled. Your GP or consultant can refer you, or you can request the test below and we'll help arrange the referral.

Is it painful?

No, not in the way a needle test is. You'll feel brief, well-tolerated tingling or muscle twitches as small electrical pulses stimulate each nerve, but there are no needles involved and no lasting discomfort.

How should I prepare?

Keep your hands and feet warm before and during the test, as cold limbs can slow nerve conduction and affect the result. Avoid body lotion or moisturiser on the day, and let the team know if you have a pacemaker, another implanted device or a bleeding disorder. Take your usual medication as normal. Because several sites are tested, your appointment may run toward the fuller end of around 30 minutes.

What happens during the appointment?

The physiologist places small adhesive electrodes at several points along the affected limb(s) and applies brief, well-tolerated electrical pulses to each nerve tested — you'll feel a tingle or twitch, not pain — building a broader picture of how well your nerves are conducting than a single-nerve test would.

Who reports the result?

This is a physiologist-led service. Your result is reviewed and issued by a Band 8 Clinical Physiologist in Neurophysiology, rather than a consultant, and the report is sent to your referring clinician.

What causes peripheral neuropathy?

Diabetes, alcohol, certain vitamin deficiencies, some medicines and hereditary conditions are among the common causes. This test tells us whether neuropathy is present and gives some information about its pattern — finding the underlying cause is then a discussion with your referring clinician.
