About the Hepatitis A Vaccination (Paediatric)

Hepatitis A is a viral liver infection transmitted through contaminated food and water, and through contact with an infected individual. Children travelling to regions where hepatitis A is endemic are at real risk of infection, particularly in areas where sanitation and food hygiene standards differ from those in the UK. While children often experience milder symptoms than adults, infected children can readily transmit the virus to family members and others — including immunocompromised individuals in whom the disease can be severe.

The paediatric hepatitis A vaccine (Havrix Junior or equivalent) is a lower-dose formulation specifically developed for children, suitable from the age of one year. It provides the same strong, long-lasting protection as the adult preparation. The vaccine is not routinely available on the NHS for healthy children but can be obtained privately at The Vesey.

Who should have this vaccination?

  • Children aged 1 year and over travelling to hepatitis A-endemic countries
  • Children visiting friends and family in countries with endemic hepatitis A
  • Children with chronic liver disease or immunological conditions that increase susceptibility
  • Children living with or in regular contact with individuals who have hepatitis A
  • Any child whose parents wish to ensure travel vaccination protection before visiting higher-risk destinations

Vaccination schedule

The paediatric hepatitis A vaccine is given as a two-dose course. The initial dose provides protection from approximately two weeks after injection. A booster dose, given 6 to 12 months later, significantly extends the duration of immunity. Children aged 16 and over transition to the adult formulation. Our clinical team will confirm the appropriate formulation, dose, and timing based on your child's age, weight, and travel itinerary.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Hepatitis A Paediatric vaccine cost at The Vesey?

The Hepatitis A Paediatric vaccine is available at The Vesey Private Hospital from £55 per dose. Book online or call 0121 387 3727.

Do I need an appointment for vaccinations at The Vesey?

Yes, we recommend booking in advance to ensure availability. Same-week appointments are usually available. Book online or call 0121 387 3727. We are open 7 days a week including Sundays.

Is the Hepatitis A Paediatric vaccine available on Sundays in Sutton Coldfield?

Yes. The Vesey is open every day of the week including Sundays from 8am to 8pm — a private clinic in Sutton Coldfield offering 7-day access for vaccinations.

At what age can children have the hepatitis A vaccine?

The hepatitis A vaccine is licensed from 1 year of age. Children aged 1 and over can receive the paediatric formulation at The Vesey. Those under 1 year are generally not vaccinated, but careful attention to food and water hygiene is important for infants travelling to endemic areas.

Does my child need the hepatitis A vaccine for school trips abroad?

Yes, hepatitis A vaccination is strongly recommended for children travelling to destinations where the infection is common, including South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and parts of Central and South America. It is wise to complete the initial dose at least 2 weeks before departure.

Are there combined hepatitis A vaccines suitable for children?

Yes. Ambirix is a combined hepatitis A and B vaccine licensed for children aged 1–15 years. It is given as a 2-dose schedule at 0 and 6 months. This is convenient for children requiring protection against both viruses — please ask our nurse about the best option for your child.

How many doses does my child need?

Children require an initial dose of the paediatric hepatitis A vaccine, followed by a booster 6–12 months later. After the 2-dose course, protection is estimated to last at least 20 years. The booster is important — a single dose alone provides only 1–2 years of protection.
