About the Meningitis Vaccination

Meningitis is inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord, most commonly caused by bacterial or viral infection. Bacterial meningitis — particularly that caused by Neisseria meningitidis — can be rapidly fatal and is a medical emergency. Survivors frequently experience serious complications including hearing loss, brain damage, limb amputation, and septicaemia-related scarring. The disease can progress from first symptoms to death within 24 hours.

Neisseria meningitidis exists in several serogroups, with A, B, C, W, and Y causing the majority of invasive disease globally. The UK childhood immunisation schedule offers protection against groups B and C. The MenACWY vaccine provides broader coverage and is particularly important for travellers to sub-Saharan Africa's meningitis belt, Hajj pilgrims, and university students.

Who should have this vaccination?

  • Travellers to the meningitis belt of sub-Saharan Africa (Senegal to Ethiopia), particularly during the dry season
  • Hajj and Umrah pilgrims — MenACWY vaccination is a mandatory requirement for entry to Saudi Arabia
  • University and college students, particularly freshers moving into hall accommodation
  • Individuals with certain medical conditions including asplenia, complement deficiencies, or HIV
  • Those travelling to countries with meningococcal outbreaks
  • Close contacts of confirmed meningococcal cases

Vaccination schedule

The MenACWY vaccine is given as a single dose for most adults and older children, and provides protection for approximately five years. The MenB vaccine (Bexsero) requires a two-dose course for individuals aged 11 and over, with at least one month between doses. Both vaccines can be administered at the same visit. Our clinical team will advise on which meningococcal vaccines are appropriate for your age, health status, and travel plans.

Frequently asked questions

How much does the Meningitis vaccine cost at The Vesey?

The Meningitis vaccine is available at The Vesey Private Hospital from £90 per dose. Book online or call 0121 387 3727.

Do I need an appointment for vaccinations at The Vesey?

Yes, we recommend booking in advance to ensure availability. Same-week appointments are usually available. Book online or call 0121 387 3727. We are open 7 days a week including Sundays.

Is the Meningitis vaccine available on Sundays in Sutton Coldfield?

Yes. The Vesey is open every day of the week including Sundays from 8am to 8pm — the only private clinic in Sutton Coldfield with 7-day access for vaccinations.

What is the difference between MenACWY and MenB vaccines?

MenACWY (e.g. Nimenrix) covers meningococcal groups A, C, W and Y, which together account for a significant proportion of cases in travellers and young adults. MenB (e.g. Bexsero) covers group B, which causes the majority of meningococcal disease in the UK. Both can be given at The Vesey.

Should my child get a meningitis vaccine before going to university?

Yes. MenACWY is strongly recommended for all young people aged 18–25 going to university, especially those entering halls of residence, as close communal living significantly increases risk. The NHS provides it free to eligible teens but private vaccination is available promptly at The Vesey.

How long does the meningitis vaccine protect for?

MenACWY vaccines provide protection for at least 5 years. Hajj pilgrims require a certificate issued within the 3 years prior to travel showing MenACWY vaccination. A booster is recommended for those with ongoing risk such as asplenic individuals or frequent travellers to sub-Saharan Africa.

What is the difference between MenACWY and MenC vaccines?

MenC vaccines cover only serogroup C. MenACWY is broader, also covering A, W, and Y, and is now recommended in preference to MenC for most indications including travel, students entering university, and Hajj/Umrah. The Vesey offers MenACWY as standard.
