About the Yellow Fever Vaccination
Yellow fever is a viral haemorrhagic disease transmitted by infected Aedes mosquitoes, endemic in tropical areas of Africa and South America. Most infections cause mild illness with fever, headache, and muscle aches. However, approximately 15% of those who contract yellow fever develop severe disease involving liver damage, jaundice, bleeding, and multi-organ failure — of which up to 50% is fatal. There is no antiviral treatment; management is supportive.
The yellow fever vaccine (Stamaril) is a live attenuated vaccine that provides robust, long-lasting protection. A single dose is now considered to confer lifelong immunity for most individuals, and a second dose is no longer routinely recommended. The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP or "yellow card") is issued upon vaccination and is valid for life — it is a mandatory entry requirement for many countries in Africa and South America, and may be required when travelling from a yellow fever-endemic country.
Who should have this vaccination?
- Travellers to yellow fever-endemic countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South America
- Those transiting through endemic regions, even briefly, if continuing to a country requiring proof of vaccination
- Anyone visiting countries that require an ICVP as a condition of entry — the list changes and should be verified before travel
- Travellers to rural or jungle areas in endemic regions at increased risk of mosquito exposure
Important: Yellow fever vaccination must be administered at least 10 days before entry to a risk country. The vaccine must be given at an approved Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre — The Vesey is a registered centre and issues the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) upon administration.
Vaccination schedule
A single dose of the yellow fever vaccine provides lifelong immunity for the vast majority of recipients and the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) is valid for life. Vaccination must be given a minimum of 10 days before arrival in a risk area. Certain individuals, including those who are immunocompromised, received their first dose in infancy, or were vaccinated during pregnancy, may require a booster — our clinical team will assess whether this applies to you. The vaccine is contraindicated in individuals with severe egg allergy, thymus disorders, and certain immunocompromising conditions.
