What does a genetic risk test tell me?

It looks for specific gene changes linked to a condition. A result describes inherited risk: it does not diagnose the condition, and a negative result does not mean no risk, because these tests look at selected genes only.

Prices include laboratory analysis and GP review of any result outside the normal range. Turnaround is the laboratory's typical time once your sample arrives.

Please note: A genetic result can affect your relatives and may be relevant to insurance. Think about this before testing. If several people in your family have had cancer, especially at a young age, ask your GP about referral to an NHS clinical genetics service. A GP discusses every result with you and can refer you to a genetic counsellor.

Genetic testing FAQs

How is the sample taken?

Most genetic tests use a blood sample or a cheek swab taken at your appointment.

How long do results take?

Most genetic tests take up to six weeks; coeliac, lactose intolerance and haemochromatosis tests take about a week. The table shows each test.

Will my results change my care?

They can. A GP explains what your result means, whether screening or lifestyle changes are worth considering, and whether referral to a specialist is appropriate.

Do I need a GP referral?

No. You can book online without a referral.

Who analyses and reviews my results?

Samples are analysed by a UKAS-accredited laboratory. A GP at The Vesey reviews any result outside the normal range and can arrange a follow-up appointment to discuss it.

Can I have the test away from Sutton Coldfield?

Yes, for most tests. Book a free call and a Health Advisor arranges your sample at a partner clinic near you, anywhere in the UK and Ireland. Your results come back to The Vesey.
